Back is a very common condition and pain ranges from a dull ache to sharp pains and these pains can be constant or come and go. Pain may increase if you are sitting or standing too long, with exercise or when carrying out certain movements. Back pain can be debilitating as well as very tiring, stressful and frustrating. Sometimes, if we are lucky the back pain goes away on its’ own and all we might need are a few painkillers and some rest from activities that aggravate it. However, if the pain persists or worsens, it is important to get it checked with your GP in the first instance.

Fortunately, in many cases it may be with helped with The Bowen Technique, a gentle but effective therapy that helps to re-align, re-balance and reduce tension throughout the body by encouraging and kick-starting the body's natural healing mechanisms. The treatment usually takes place with the client lying down although I do treat some clients seated, if necessary. It is performed through light clothing, so no need to undress. It involves a series of rolling-type moves using thumbs or fingers over muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia at precise points on the body. These are interspersed with short breaks where you are left resting. This allows the body to respond, and it is a very important part of the treatment. This is also why conversation is kept to a minimum but I will check in with you to make sure you are comfortable and explain any moves that I need to make, if necessary. Most clients drift off into a light sleep during treatment, so I make sure you are given time to come round before you go home.

"Having been very cynical about complementary therapies, I would like to say how happily surprised I have been by how successful Bowen has proved for me. I have had a bad lower back for many years due to damage done in my twenties (I am now in my late forties) and have suffered neck pain intermittently following a whiplash injury. I have tried various therapies, including different physiotherapists, osteopaths and an acupuncurist, with little success. Since starting a course of Bowen with Lisa, I have been almost completely clear of symptoms and when I start to feel a twinge, I visit for a top up and the Bowen seems to keep problems at bay. Amazing! I would thoroughly recommend your practice."
"I won my 'Bowen Experience' in a raffle so decided to give it a go. I had Physiotherapy for years which 'maintained' my back rather than cured the underlying problem. I thought it all sounded very odd and the almost 'hands-off' approach seemed a ridiculous treatment but it worked and my back and shoulders have never been better."
"I came for some Bowen treatment due to ongoing lumbar pain since the 1970's and also for Sciatica pain in my right leg. It was making movements such as walking and bending etc painful and difficult. The Bowen treatment feels like it has re-levelled my pelvis and relieves a lot of discomfort for a while. The improvement in my stance has been great and this in itself eases the back spasms and pain. It has given me confidence to walk further before resorting to sitting down."
"I came for a Bowen treatment on recommendation of my wife who also sees Lisa. I have suffered for a good 40 years with lower back stiffness and pain and was also becoming bent over and stooped most noticeably when walking. It is always difficult to quantify how Bowen has benefited me but I do find the treatment very relaxing and an enjoyable experiece and I feel 'better' afterwards. I regard it as maintenance treatment and it enables me to continue playing golf". Mr S, Kent.
Please note: The Bowen Technique and other complementary therapies do not replace conventional medicine, and you should always seek the advice of your GP. Complementary therapists do not diagnose, nor do they prescribe or alter medication. They may, however, advise clients to be regularly assessed by their doctor in case their medication dose needs to be adjusted.
